Last event it became clear to me that we do not have enough shields for the army. So I'm thinking we need to organise a Saturday or off Sunday in the coming weeks where we can resolve this. I know many of our new troops are playing Rangers and Clerics, 36 inch rounds make excellent shields for both of these classes. I myself use one for both my druid and cleric. They also reinforce the Spartan theme of Laconia!

Please post here if you are playing a class that needs a shield, and are interested in learning to build, and owning one. The date and location are both up in the air, so let me know what works for you so we can coordinate.

I'm pretty good at making shields now, and there a few different ways we can do it
-plank foam shields- very lightweight but more expensive, tho i know a few sources now for getting the foam. every time i've called the place tho they don't answer the phone, so i guess someone needs to go there and check it out in person to price it.

-blue foam/open cell shields- much cheaper and readily available materials, but heavier. Weight will depend on what type of open cell you use. weight can also be cut down further if we replace the edgeing with a better foam. Andrew used to get some cool stuff from his job, wonder if he can get more...

Also think about whether you want punch grip or traditionsl strapping.

So spread the word and let's make it happen!!

I'm all about shields and wouldn't mind learning how to make one and own one. Saturday would be a better day for me as I'm off that day but I can also do it Sunday I just need to work at night. Until then.

I'd be up for a shield day, especially if it involved plank foam. Being a thief, and well, old and skinny, I'd like a lighter shield.

I also might have some 1/4' plywood that I'd be willing to share so we can cut some bucklers. I mostly need access to a saw--don't really feel like trying to cut with a hacksaw.

Let me know...

Everybody who is anybody knows that 18-inch yellow shields are better than anything else.

I've got some thoughts on this one, but rather than going off-topic here, I'll start another post...

yeah we are going to need access to a skillsaw. i might might might have one i can borrow from work, skip has one, or brendans warehouse might have one we can use...
saturday is the only vote on the day so far...so lets set a tentative (ie subject to change) date for next saturday? being the one that isnt this weekend.
are people cool with coming to the city or is omewhere in the glen burnie area better? we could do it at my place, or i could ask skip if he's up for a shield party.
i still need to go down to house of foam and check prices...
and as far as posting about building shields i could prob do that, but i'd need to write something up.
cheers!
btw if anyone needs to talk to me, private message me or send me one on myspace and i'll give you my phone number
cheers!

a buckler and spear/quarterstaff in 1 hand is a very effective "shield".

I just got a strange mental image of fighting with two 4' qstaffs as if they were oversized eskrima sticks.

::shakes head::

Nevermind. Time to go back to work.

ok so after going to the foam store and talking to kevin, i think buying our shield blanks from him is the way to go. he sent me some prices, and i know it's a bit expensive, but it's cheaper then the foam store

36" round- $60
30" round- $45
2'x3' rectangle- $35

i didnt ask about 24" rounds but they are prob a bit cheaper than the rectangle. i can also ask about bucklers if needed.
i'd like to try to collect money this weekend, as kevin is planning on going to get the foam on monday. Skip proposed a practice at Wyman Park on saturday, where we can fight for a few hours, and drop off money. If you can't make it saturday, i could potentially meet up with you at another time before sunday. please private message/myspace me if you need my phone number, i dont want to post it here.
PLEASE LET US KNOW ASAP!
also remember that the first campout is coming up in march. NOW is the time to start thinking about what gear you need to complete your class kit.
weaponry, armour, garb, spell components etc.
cheers everyone!
